One of my favorite quilt blocks to make is the snowball block. (Maybe because "it is the season" for snowballs!) Anyway, I was amazing at how many booths and exhibitors at Quilt Market had snowball quilts or quilts with snowballs in them! Maybe I just noticed them because I am fond of them.. but there were sure were a lot.
The snowball quilt block would be perfect to use if you have to make a quick gift for the holidays. Fun and Fast!
Not sure what a snowball block is? It is a great multi-use block that starts with a square then has triangles attached to each corner--to form a "snowball-ish" looking block.
This is one snowball quilt I particularly liked when I saw it at Market. This tablerunner pattern is from the book "Follow the Dots...To Dazzling Quilts" from Bella Nonna Design Studio. I attended a class presented by the Bella Nonna Design Studio while at Quilt Market...they displayed many fun "dotty" projects from the book--inlcuding this "dotty snowball" tablerunner. There are 10 different projects featuring Polka dots in the book.. It is worth checking out.
Back to making snowballs...
In Susan C. Druding’s article in About.com’s Quilting Guide she says “All quilters need to have a few blocks in their repertoire that are all-purpose blocks. The Snowball Block is one of these. It makes a wonderful quilt used alone, but it's even more useful to combine with other blocks, particularly those based on a 9 patch or "divided in thirds" type block structure so that it will line up with the divisions in the other blocks.”
Do a search on Susan's site and you will come up with a bunch of great ideas and how-tos about how to make and use the snowball block. Below is a quilt Susan generated to show the snowball block in a larger quilt.
So this winter make some fabric snowballs! This is an easy to do block that can be made in any size. Have fun try it! Looks great scrappy or with matchy coordinated fabrics.
