Sit, Stitch and Watch the Olympic Games!
I love the Olympics. If I could, I would watch all day, every day of the 2-week long adventure.

When my husband and I were first married over 20 years ago, I made my husband buy me a new TV so I could watch them on a TV bigger than the 9” screen we had.tv.jpg

Being “starving” students, we had little money, but he scrounged up enough to upgrade to a 13”. It was heaven watching the Olympics on such a big screen! Years later, our family attended the winter games in Salt Lake City—but that story is for a different blog on a different day!

For the next two weeks, I am prepared to enjoy the games. I have saved all of my handwork that needs to be done on my quilts and knitting projects, so I can sit, stitch, and sew and watch the games.

The Opening Ceremonies were great. And being a former “Disco Queen” during the early 1980’s, I will have to say I really enjoyed the music they played during thedisco ball.jpg parade of the athletes.

There have been mixed reviews on the musical selection—most liked the music ok—but the question asked most often is “why was it selected?”

“Mercidork
” posted a nice summary of the opening ceremonies of which he made note of the random selection of American pop music:

High points of the opening ceremony:
1) Acrobats.
2) Pavarotti.
3) Odd ear-muff type things with the image of the national flag that a few teams wore.
4) Formations.
5) The dresses of the women who carried the country name signs during the parade of nations.

Low points:
1) Yoko Ono.
2) Plastic cows and people in polka dot outfits.
3) Italian team's outfits.
4) Yoko Ono.
5) The "seemingly random assortment of American pop music" played throughout the parade of nations.
6) Yoko Ono.
7) YOKO ONO!!!

"It's like junior high school all over again," said Matthigh in another post.
He said: “So, what was the deal with the music they played during the procession of the athletes at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics? All late seventies to early eighties American pop and club dance music, seemed very unusual for a sports event in Italy in 2006. Even the TV commentators were snarking over the songs.

Village People? Pat Benatar? Van Halen? New Order? The Buggles?

It's as if they plucked someone out of a dance club in 1983 and told him to do the music programming. Almost surreal”.

I loved the music. Lets move on with the games.
