Quilts, Quilts, Quilts and Olympic Gold Medals
Quilts. Quilts. Quilts. And lots of Gold Medals.peter vidmar.jpg

I just got back from a dinner held at the home of Olympic champion, Peter Vidmar. His home, if you can imagine, is beautiful. And it holds many beautiful items, including hundreds of gymnastics medals, statues and awards including three Olympic Gold Medals…Two gold and one silver, which he received in the 1984 Olympics. That alone was impressive.

But what really got my attention was the quilts on the walls. There were all sorts: primitive, “shabby chic”, country, novelty, and traditional quilts on display on the walls of their Southern California home.

Peter’s wife, Donna is a quilter! She showed me part of her collection when she invited a few of us into her sewing room. Which, I might add was spotless and organized. An armoire held over 30 more quilts (I didn’t count…I am guessing) that she had made over the years…and she has 5 kids! I am not sure which impressed me more the fact that she could make so many quilts while raising five kids or that her sewing room was incredibly organized.

Anyway, Donna does beautiful work—especially her appliqué work. So on my score card for “gifted and talented quilters ” I give her a perfect ten…just like her husband got on the pommel horse competition in 1984.

Thanks, Vidmars, for hosting the dinner and showing your quilts!

P.S. I can't wait for the winter games to start on Friday!

And F.Y.I.-- Peter said that Los Angeles just put its name in the hat to host the Olympic games 2016.

Gina,
I enjoyed hearing about Donna Vidmar's quilts. Quilters are the most interesting people ever!

Absolutely love your blog site. I am sending the URL to both of my sisters. One designs the most incredibly creative costumes for dance productions and the other one is an "out-of-control" quilter. She has an amazing stash of fabric - everything from authentic Japanese hand woven to vintage - and has produced an astonishing number of beautiful quilts.

Regards,
Carol

Wow! Sounds like quite an experience. It is so fun to find some inspiration in a new friend.
:)

You're doing a great job here Gina! Keep up the good work.
