The small shop (tiny, I really mean) is fabulous. Filled to the brim with wonderful yarns, needles, books, patterns and samples. I had just started my browsing when what to my surprise I spotted an announcement about a quilting shop that Joelle had opened just a few doors down.
I ran over to the shop as fast as I could!
"Purl patchwork" opened in mid-March and like it’s sister store, "purl" it is located in a small renovated shop (I am guessing it is about 10 fabric bolts wide!). I visited the store the day after it was featured on TV on Martha Stewart Living.
So, I decided, if Martha can feature this fun shop, so can I on the QuiltersBuzz!
The shop is stocked floor to ceiling with the great fabric lines of fabric designers: Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt, Heather Ross, (who designed the “Lightning Bugs & Other Mysteries” fabric line and is also teaching classes at "purl patchwork"). There are yarn spuns from Japan, fabrics from Michael Miller, Moda, and reproductions in both the 1930's and Civil War, just to name a few.
"Purl patchwork's" talented worker girls, Phyllis Forbes (a-seamstress-turned-quilter) and Molly Schnick (a-knitter-turned-quilter), were very helpful and they said that about half of "purl patchwork's" business has been from tourists (like me) and the other half is from local New Yorkers.
Owner, Joelle, convinced her sister, Jennifer Hoverson, to join in the venture and she is now her business partner operating the web business from the opposite coast in California. "Purl" currently sells online and soon so will "purl patchwork ", said Joelle.
And good news for us is that Joelle has agreed to be a guest blogger on QuiltersBuzz in May. We will be featuring both her stores and a new book she has coming. Stay tuned.
