The Creative Quilted Works of Gee's Bend, Nancy Crow, Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston...Are Inspiring, Bursting With Color! My Photo Friends Are Capturing Some of These Works on Film....And "Prints Charming" Gets Their Yardage....
I am a fan of The Quilts of Gee’s Bend.  Nancy Crow, Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston  also “speak to me”.  And I had myself a “Ding, Ding Ding” moment when I saw this post by the girls at Material Obsession who put the creative works of these ladies all together for a grouping of inspiration.

I am so glad they gathered up the works of these quilt makers so I could take a deeper look at their quilted creations. Here is what Kathy and Sarah had to say about it all…

“Inspiration is a concept that varies for all but for everyone it's a thought or vision that requires action for satisfaction.  This morning I had three most inspirational books open for three different things: “Collaborative Quilting” by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston, Nancy Crow's engaging new book and Gee's Bend, The Women and Their Quilts. Like this...

These three books are worlds apart by cover but interesting as a group.  Nancy Crow is determined and beautifully structured.  Freddy and Gwen are spontaneous and bursting with color and spirit.

Gee's Bend, well if chance is their creative director take me to the roulette table of quilting!  I thought they made a nice complimentary story and then remembered a piece of work inspired a while ago and then set aside in haste.  Perhaps, when the time is right, it will be enough inspiration on it's own to be finished.”

Thanks for the inspiring collection…read more from these Australian girls and see more photos on their site.

Lucky For Me…

And lucky for me, yesterday, I had a chance to spend a wonderful afternoon with the talented photographers of Freddy and Gwen’s book, “Collaborative Quilting”, Elena Morera and Gregory Case.freddy_gwen_thm.jpg

freddy_gwen_thm.jpgElena and Gregory are capturing the quilting industry on film and will be working with Freddy and Gwen again for another book.  A big part of their business is photographing quilts for quilt designers (including Anne at “Bunny Hill” and Joanna “Fig Tree” Designs) and their pattern covers.

They also take photos and stage quilts for magazines, brochures and websites. And if you need a fantastic photo of your quilt to enter it into a show or contest…they are the photographers you should consider.   Look for a feature on Gregory and Elena in the future and they will also be guest writers for QuiltersBuzz.

And Double Lucky…

And double lucky, I will be attending the Gee’s Bend museum exhibit later this month in San Francisco.  Hurry if you want to go, the three-year exhibit ends it tour at the end of December.

My other Australian buddies, Prints Charming, attended the “Gee’s Bend” exhibit a few weeks ago and you can listen to their report on Annie Smith’s podcast at Simply Arts.  I also hear that Prints Charming received their yardage of "Follow Your Imagination" from Free Spirit…They will be telling us more about that as well on Quilter’s Buzz.prints%20charming%20yardage.JPG

Looks like Cath & Kirsten are having bolts of fun -- makes me want to fly to Australia to 'play fabric.'

Read your article in Quilt for the Home. It was very good. Of course, my quilt keeps me hot just because of it being large enough to fit my bed. Put some flannel sheets on it and I'm as snug as a bug in a rug. It is very exciting to know an author for a quilt magazine.

I just heard that Kathy Ireland the designer that does rug, furniture, lamps and all kinds of stuff for the home, has incorporated the Quilts of Gee's Bend designs into her line. I just saw the quilts on postage stamps and there beautiful. I would like to know where to find these items

My company, Classic Rug Collection, came out with the Gee's Bend Quilt Collection of rugs 3 1/2 years ago. We were the first company to license the Gee's Bend designs, and the women get a royalty on every rug that we sell. Please visit www.classicrug.com or come to the Orlando Museum of Art for the Gee's Bend Quilt show opening Jan. 23-28, 2007. Barbara Barran, Pres. Classic Rug Collection.
