Fun in the Moda playground continues….I learned a few bits of info that I thought you all would like to know about Moda I found out while attending a retreat this week.![]()
But, first let me tell you readers that the Moda people are reading your comments from my last post and are listening to what you have to say.
And they have added to the “pot” of goodies. So, now there will be more goodie give-a-ways on Thursday--at least 10 maybe more! Be sure to make a comment here on this post (by midnight on Wednesday) or on my previous post to get entered in to win…fat quarter packs, charm packs and jelly rolls.![]()
WHY MODA?Someone at the retreat and several Quilter’s Buzz readers have asked about how the Moda name came to be. I was curious myself. It means “fashion” in both French and Italian. And it is short and easy to remember, so says Moda owner, Mark Dunn.
Moda started as United Notions—selling sewing notions--in the 1970’s, eventually they added basic fabrics to their line, which evolved to the creating designer lines. Moda is the fabric division, which has 24 designers and in-house designers. United Notions is the notions division and there is also a Moda Home which is the finished goods division.![]()
“Our customer is the quilter and homemaker who likes working with textiles and cares about her home. Everything we do involves fabric or is a by-product of fabric. We love that retro and old nostalgia look and feel and with our products we pretty much stay in the niche”.
"Hookers", "Strippers" and "Fluffers", Oh My!
Jokingly, Mark remarked that this is the only industry where you can you have “hookers”, “strippers” and “fluffers”.
Let me explain….Hookers: are rug and crochet hookers; Strippers: are quilters sewing with 2 ½” fabric strips and jelly rolls; and Flufflers” are what Moda calls the display divas who hang displays and quilts and “fluff” up the store.![]()
Moda keeps up with the trends in fashion and home décor industries as they travel through out the country and the world seeking the colors and textures are going to be the “hot” new trend.
It was amazing to found out that Moda launches a new fabric collection about every 6 weeks, but they are committed to wait until the entire fabric collection is in stock before they ship any of the pieces. They are sometimes collecting parts of the complete collection from five or more different countries or locations…They may get the printed fabric from Japan or Korea, the wovens and stripes from India, a velvet or corduroy from another country and a basket or tin to display it in from Africa or Italy.
Only when the collection is complete does the order ship. So, essentially, every quilt shop –big or small--that orders fabric from a collection can receive it on the same day. ![]()
“We may push the limits of the industry a bit,”, but we are committed to every shop and we understand the way fabric flows through a quilt store, said Mark.
Moda has been innovators in the quilting industry, in addition to offering great fabric collections, Moda was the first fabric company to offer packaged fat quarter bundles, charm packs and jelly rolls to the consumer---and quilt shop owners love that they can reduce their time at the cutting table.
Today, we met with Moda designers and made yo-yos with Alma and Barb and learned
how to remove color from fabric and over dye to make it look distressed. Amy Bradley showed us her appliqué techniques, introduced us to her new lines and did a bit of a bump and grind dance dressed as one of her alter ego Quilt Divas . Lynne Hagmeier told us about her “Kansas Troubles Quilters” and retreat center. And we got to see strike offs of Deb Strain's current fabric collection and watched as she painted the samples for her next fabric collection.![]()
We got a chance to wander (and ride)
and shop through the 150,000 square foot warehouse. We hooted and hollered with Gracelyn, Kathy, Cheryl, Barb, Lissa, Debbie, Debbie , Angela, Joyce and Mark and other member of the marvelous Moda Crew. (FYI: Delta Dotties Rock.)
It has been a fabulous weekend hanging out with the fun, talented, sassy and kind folks at Moda. Thanks for opening your doors and hearts to the 90 of us.
And I guess that the Moda/United Notions crew is doing something right…they are cranking out about 10 million yards of fabric a year! And we are buying it!![]()
MODA GIVEAWAYS
And if you want some free Moda stuff. Make a comment here or on my previous post to get entered into the drawing for jelly rolls, fat quarter packs and charm packs. And if you want your quilting voice to be heard, make a comment…Moda is listening.
Mark Dunn and Lissa Alexander will be picking out the winners for the drawing on Thursday morning and will guest writing a bit for us as well. Stay tuned.![]()

It sounds like Disneyland for quilters. What fun!

It was a delight to have Gina (Stephanie and shop owners, etc) here for a sneak peek behind the scenes. For those of you that know Gina personally, you know how much fun she adds to any event. Her "sewority-Delta Delta Dotties" did not win the grand prize, but they did score big for originality. It is fun reading all your comments.

Your blog is wonderful - I read it every day and have pushed my quilt guild to bookmark it as well. Your Moda weekend must have been so inspiring. And to meet all those designers - heaven! Thank you for writing about it!!!

It is lovely to see all the things that Moda is putting together...I love all the co-ordinates that go with with fabrics to tell a story...as we are behind a bit in Australia it is really nice to see what is going on on your site...well done...Julie

I am sooooooo jealous! Gina - you sound like you had a blast and I wish I would have been in your shoes! Touring Moda - what a dream!

now that is a fascinating look behind the scenes. i had no idea that's how things happen.
i'm fairly new to quilting (5 slooow years) -- what does one do with a jelly roll?
Posted by: mary beth | July 21, 2007 5:25 PM
As long as Moda is listening, I am very concerned about the pricing of fabric. The higher it goes, and the lower the incomes of quilters retreat, more and more people are being driven out.
We need more quilters, young and old, to be joining IN, not to be unable to purchase the best of the fabrics.
Posted by: Sequana | July 21, 2007 5:56 PM
woohoo for giveaways!
Posted by: Melissa Er-Raqabi | July 21, 2007 7:21 PM
I love seeing the factory pictures. And one of the best thing to happen to quilt shops is the fat quarter. It's great being able to buy more of a variety to build your stash. Sometimes I'll like a fabric a lot and go back to see if I can find more of it. I've never tried using a jelly roll yet. But I can see how it'd make for some great scrap quilts. :-)

I just pieced my first quilt this week! I'm liking it, now to make the quilt sandwich and all the rest.

Gina, can I be you when I grow up? You got to spend the weekend in a warehouse full of Moda fabric and stuff. Absolutely toooooo diiiiiiee for. I love everything Moda produces and probably purchase some of every collection. They inspire my creativity with every piece of new fabric. Thank you MODA!!
Posted by: Rhonda | July 21, 2007 7:50 PM
Imagine -- being in a whole warehouse full of my favorite fabric.
Posted by: Betty | July 21, 2007 8:03 PM
The idea of the jelly rolls (strips) is fantastic but the packaging of strips could be improved as it relates to making a quilt. I purchased a jelly roll of Christmas Past and the associated pattern only to find that I would need to purchase 3 rolls to complete the quilt as designed (to have the right number of light strips). I'm waiting until the fabric is out and then I'll purchase another roll and then yardage to make my own strips. Not really what I had in mind.

Boys! Why does it seem that most fabric is designed with women in mind? As the mother of two boys, I would like to see fabric (and not novelty) designed or colored for boys. Boys like more than just red, yellow, blue and green. While I'm not into pink for boys what about a great collection of geometrics win purple and orange?
Posted by: Shari van der Grijn | July 21, 2007 8:39 PM
I just love the 'jelly rolls'! I've already used 3 rolls and I'm anxious to do more!

Hi from Vienna, Austria... I am always in awe when reading your blog! All these insights into the industry..well, Europe is far away from this appreciation of our craft...but we try :) I just noticed that actually when I buy my Moda fat quarter packages they have travelled already many long distances to reach me, because somehow I thought that the cotton fabric is produced in the States. However, thanks for the great job you do! Christine from Vienna
Posted by: Christine | July 21, 2007 11:11 PM
Great to see behind the scenes. Moda's one of my favourite fabric houses, not only for the quality of design, but the quality of the fabric - it always feels so lovely in the hand. I particularly like fat quarter bundles, jelly rolls, charm packs, anything that lets me have 'a little of a lot' so I have plenty of different fabrics to play with, and it's good that a fabric manufacturer is facilitating this in ways that could be just time-impossible for quilt shops.
Posted by: rooruu | July 21, 2007 11:48 PM
What a very interesting article.
Someone else commented on the price of fabric. In the UK the cost is too high - I know that shipping etc has to be added in and that quilt shops need to make a profit, but when it takes getting on for 2 hours of adult minimum wage to buy a metre of fabric, (and some places are charging £10 a metre) quilting becomes a luxury. Very worrying.

They just always fit my taste in fabric colors and design.

It's great to find a company that actually pays attention & responds to its customers! Go Moda!

Mark; I know there are a lot of shop owner wannabe's out there. Why not have a contest where the contestants either submit a business plan or composition of sorts about their dream quilt shop. The winner could receive and invitation to your next event. The rest of us quilter's would be winners too, as it may result in a new quilt shop opening somewhere, by pushing someone's dream into a reality. Moda would win too by having another outlet for their fabrics.

Hi Everyone, I rarely use anything but Moda, they have the leading designers, My Favourite's are 3 Sisters and Chez Moi and many others. The quality of the fabrics are always fantastic and the proof of that is how you can wash them over and over. Yes I agree they are not a budget brand but they represent great value for money. The collections are always very thoughtful and if I am going to spend hours making an item, I want to be able to hand it on to someone else, for them to enjoy. Thanks Moda for many happy hours.

I love Moda, it's my most favorite fabric, I have been using Moda every since they started I think.
I just love the charm packs. I just made the table attire runner pattern this weekend from the holly jolly line from the charm pack, and purcharsed xtra backing and binding. It turned out so cute, I'm going back to my quilt shop today to get 4 more charm packs.

I LOVE Moda fabrics! While the price of the fabrics may be inching upwards, I am not willing to sacrifice quality for quantity. If I'm going to spend my "free" time quilting, then I make sure to work with only the highest quality fabrics. And Moda definitely has cornered the market for high-quality fabrics! I love 3 Sisters, Blackbird Designs and April Cornell, and try to buy at least something from each of their collections, even if it's just a charm pack for a mini-quilt. The other thing I love about Moda is their innovation: charm packs, jelly rolls...I look forward to every quilt market to see their new ideas!!

Just keep doing what you are doing Moda. It seems you get everything right, from top notch product quality to designs both trendsetting (Butler, Urbanchiks) & timeless (Brannock/Patek, 3 Sisters, etc.) And a bit about your merchandising: jelly rolls, charm packs? Genius!
It is important to me that you keep innovating and setting the bar high. I have three daughters and I would love to pass my quilting passion on to them. When I think of the future of quilting, Moda is the name that pops into my head first.

I really love the Moda line of fabrics! My local store doesn't carry the whole line, so I must go out of town or buy online. The new Holly Jolly line is adorable! The factory tour is like a dream come true!

I went into a quilt shop a year ago that was about an hour away and fell in love with the moda fabric! Are quilt shops the only places that carry those lovely fabrics? The company should make the fabric more accessible to people everywhere. I've been trying to hunt it down on e-bay, but they don't offer any quanities.
