National Punctuation Day Reminds Us What Binds Us

What are you doing for National Punctuation Day?

I thought I would mention National Punctuation Day which is celebrated (used loosely) on September 24th.

As journalism major, I received plenty of training in the nuances of punctuation and style usage. I probably always took it for granted. As a blogger, I try and do my best to spell and punctuate accurately but I confess, I make mistakes - often due to being in a hurry. For some reason, blogging feels more personal and you as readers, seem more understanding. I hope that is so. Nevertheless, I will still strive to punctuate correctly – today and everyday.

Interestingly, National Punctuation Day is only four years old. According to the official site, National Punctuation Day

“started as a clever idea to remind corporations and professional people of the importance of proper punctuation [and] has turned into an everyday mission to help school children learn the punctuation skills they need to be successful in life.

The website is headed by this proclamation,

National Punctuation Day

“A celebration of the lowly comma, correctly used quotes and other proper uses of periods, semicolons and the ever-mysterious ellipsis”

and provides this info

“Founded in 2004 by former newspaperman Jeff Rubin, NPD is listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events and The Teacher’s Calendar, two directories published by McGraw-Hill.”

There is a photo gallery of grammar and spelling mistakes found on signs. These are submitted by website visitors. Here are a few of the many mistakes shown.

National Punctuation Day

It is a fitting reminder that whether you are a quilt shop owner, blogger or just someone that makes an occasional comment on Quiltersbuzz, language and its correct usage, binds us together. Punctuation and grammar mistakes weaken that bind.

PS. Here is a good tutorial on binding – quilts that is.

As the editor of my high school newspaper for 2 years, I'm very intrigued with the idea of Punctuation Day...especially how it relates to texting on a cell phone these days! Ha Ha! Now all the punctuation marks have double meanings!

Hey Gina -- thanks for this reminder. I guess we bloggers need to be a little more careful, huh?
The one that drives me crazy is the incorrect tenses used in retail windows, usually by ESL shop owners. Like the ones who advertise "Donuts, crossants, and muffin" in their shop windows. It always makes me wonder if they get their signs from ESL challenged sign makers, or the sign makers just make what they are told and let it go.

Have a good and productive day, you busy Bee!!
