I have heard wonderful things about the “Quilting in the Garden" event” which is held annually each September at Alden Lane Nursery in
Lucky for us, the Photoman and guest QuiltersBuzz roving reporter, Gregory Case, was at the celebration this year which featured quilter and designer, Valori Wells and a retrospective of quilts provided by artists featured at this event over the past 10 years.![]()
Some say a picture is worth a thousand words…so I give you Gregory’s photos and only 304 of his words!
Quilting in the Garden (Or, This Year Only: Quilting in the Buildings)
It was all in the news last Saturday. The Bay Area had not made this much rain since April 2007. For the past nine years, the Quilting in the Garden, Alden Lane Nursery Show (
wires hoisted up in the air, against the big trees, so the morning sun filters through the fabric. This year, marking their tenth anniversary, however, it rained all day. Therefore, what happens to an outdoor quilt garden event—you put the quilts in buildings!
Valori Wells was the featured artist (along with her two-month old baby and Valori’s mom, Jean Wells). All of
Valori’s quilts were hung in one building, while a retrospective of the last nine featured artists quilts were shown in the main building, while a third building featured local quilt guilds/artists.
Pleasanton's premiere quilter and television personality, Alex Anderson has always worked with the Alden Lane show as inspiration, mentor, and contributing artist. She has authored many books, including her newest, "Neutral Essentials", designed quilts and fabrics, and hosted HDTV's "Simply Quilts" for 12 years.
Anderson and fellow quilter, Ricky Tims, are now teamed in the first global quilters' interactive video-magazine,The Quilt Show.
As co-founder of this event Alex posted several short videos both previewing the show and while the show was happening, that can be found over at The Quilt Show.
In conjunction, the Livermore Valley Garden Tour, featured 10 gardens, but no quilts were shown outside. One stop along the way showed various guild quilt’s in the guesthouse!

Of course, the next day Sunday, it didn’t rain, but was overcast all day. Next year, the promoters promise better weather and once again it will be Quilting in the Garden instead of Quilting in the Buildings.

If you ever get a chance to visit, its worth it. I went a few years ago (the last year Alex Anderson was in charge) and took a class with Jan Krentz at Aldens' and the next day went to the show. It is so nice and amazing the quilts hanging everywhere.

This is a wonderful quilt show. This year for the first time, we invited the public to display their quilts in the show. Sunday the weather was beautiful and the quilts were hanging from all the trees. We invite you to join us next year, mark your calendar for the fourth weekend of September. Prior to the show, classes are offered with the featured artist. Bring some friends and enjoy the show and Livermore.
