Here is a fun group of quilters I thought you might like to read about. Check out
the “Fringe Sisters” (--their name sounds like they are latest “girl” band from the Disney Channel) from South Carolina who are stretching the boundaries of quilting.
We all quilt for different reasons, but the one thing that quilting provides all of us is an opportunity for creativity and expression. Quilting offers a unique art form steeped in tradition but also provides room for new and innovative expression.![]()
The Fringe Sisters are a talented group of artists that came together about seven years ago in Columbia, South Carolina when they realized they wanted to explore a different side of quilting.
Quilting is their foundation but beyond that they have dropped all rules or boundaries. It seems everything and anything can make its way into a Fringe Sisters quilt. Beyond just fabric, you might see feathers, beads, sequins, mosaic pieces, ribbons and more. What unites them is their artistry and love of quilting. The group meets once a month to share their work.![]()
Sounds like a new, young generation of quilters right? Not so. As the photo below shows, The Fringe Sisters, although pushing the boundaries, are not some crazy bunch of kids. They are mothers and grandmothers.
Maybe it is their experience and quilting knowledge that has allowed them to go beyond the norms of their craft. To me, it is a great reminder that creativity and artistic expression is not confined to any one demographic or group.
We all have our own unique experience and perspective. I love opportunities to learn from others when they share their quilts and art. That is what I love about this industry…You can be the “queen of your quilt” and it can be whatever you want it to be.
Thanks Fringe Sisters for doing your thing and sharing it with us. Check out their website and exhibit dates.
