Moda’s “layer cakes” of fabric were well received by Quilt Market attendees. I
interviewed many shop owners about how they think they will be received by quilters… and most agreed that they will be a hit and they orders them up by the dozens.
A Big thanks to Moda for playing with us and sending out some Freebies.
I forgot to ask how much they will sell for...Anyone from Moda... can you tell us please?
JUST IN: Joanna of FigTree Quilts just reminded me that she promised to donate "a bakers dozen" of her "Blossom" patterns--created especially to be used with pieces of layer cakes. So, here is another chance to win freebies....
MAKE A COMMENT ON THIS POST...BY SUNDAY AT MIDNIGHT PACIFIC TIME AND BE ENTERED TO WIN A Blossom PATTERN! I am all about the give-a-ways!
1. I would make a quilt for my friend, Lisa. She and her husband have been through a lot this summer (deaths of 2 young girls he coached at school and the death of a good friend; all while adding on an addition to their house). Giving them a quilt would be a great way of giving them hugs every day!

2. If I won, I would make a quilt for my nephews. I have made them many sweaters, however I haven't perfected the way to make children stop growing up, so they keep growing out of them! A lovely (and large) play-time quilt would be perfect!
Posted by: Jeannine
3. Truth be told, I would be tempted to make one for myself! :) But I also would like to make a quilt for the wonderful woman who cleans my house every week -- she is really my biggest encourager, and every week tells me how much she loves the things I sew, and how she wishes she had time to sew, etc. etc. She works so hard and supports so many family members with her work alone. She truly deserves a beautiful quilt.

4. I would make a quilt with appliquéd cherries. You can't have a cake without a cherry on top!
Posted by: Rhonda
5. I guess I'd have to make something delicious for myself, since I'm dieting. Finally, a layer cake that will make me happy and have zero calories. Heaven!!!

6. I recently became addicted to collecting charm packs. I'm like a kid in a candy store. Bigger is better, so I would love to start a collection of Layer Cakes. The best part of any new fabric acquisition is flipping through magazines and books, imagining all the possibilities. Eventually, I find the perfect combination of fabric and pattern and tend to pass the quilt along to whoever I begin to think of when I am working on the quilt.

7. I would use these beautifully-colored fabrics to make a quilt for my son Lorin who has just returned home from a year-long deployment in

8. Charm packs OK. Jelly rolls fantastic. Layer cakes perfect! I have a number of patterns that I can immediately use with this size of offering! I appreciate the creativity of the designers in delivering new patterns using the new sizes (note the large number of jelly roll patterns now) and I expect to enjoy viewing all the new layer cake patterns that are soon to be seen.
As my boys age (they're now 6 and 8), I'm planning to help new mothers who seek assistance at our local crisis pregnancy center. The birth of a baby is to be cherished and I would love to share of the joy of creating a nursery (a haven for mother and baby) with a quilt and other fabric-based items.

9. I'd make something to give to the Habitat for Humanity Auction next spring. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
Posted by: Jeanne
10. Our small town often has benefit auctions for people in need. The last two were to raise money to help pay for medical expenses for individuals with cancer. Since I made quilts for the last two auctions, I would use the layer cake fabric to make a quilt to donate for the next auction.

11. Oh! Oh! Oh! My niece's house got half way burned by the fires. The house is in bad shape but she and her DH are ready and willing to clean up, build up, and keep their chins up! The Moda fabric will be used in a quilt for their new bedroom! And she loves Moda fabric!!!! Cynthia B

12. If I won, I and my grandaughter would make a project for the county fair next year. She has already entered a bag last year (she is seven) and won a blue ribbon and $l.50 - what excitement. My grandaughter is my hope for the future of my stash :) as my daughter is not at all interested in sewing.

13. So exciting - love the Moda charm packs - I am actually kind of addicted to them! I do a lot of appliqué, and they come in handy, though not always enough fabric to use for an appliqué piece - so another reason to love the layer cakes idea. If i won, i would make anotehr quilt for my dear Mom. My first completed quilt went to a friend, my second , very complictaed and quickly done quilt went to my mom for Christmas - she cried . i was even in a severe accident during the quilting process, and still finished it just in time. Mom helps me often, even if it is just holding my hand, becasue i have had Rheumatoid arthritis since teh age of 2, and am having a very difficult time the last few years. So mom deserves another quilt, and it would be a mix of patterns, with a lot of applique, and a little pieced. i would let the fabric u sent me speak to me as to what pattern to look for! Moda - love ya' and Gina - you too for giving us this great oppprtunity! - maybe i should make a quilt for u!!!

Alright you crazy girl... I promised you I would join in the giveaway fun! So I guess that means I'll be sending over a baker's dozen of the Blossom pattern to MODA to go with each Layer Cake prize.
It's always fun to be your friend, Gina... :-)

Perhaps we crossed paths in email land....The Blossom patterns were meant to go with the prizewinners so that they have something to do with those yummy layer cakes they just won!
So... let me know what you want me to give away to whom... when....

I own a quilt shop, ordered lots of the Layer Cakes, and I don't think I ever asked how much they'd cost! We're looking forward to receiving ours, alond with all the great Moda fabric we love.

Congrats to the winners, what a wonderful way to start the New Year with a layer cake in the mail. I'd love a chance to win a blossom

I love the blossom pattern! I've never bought a charm pack as I felt it would be too limiting, but the layer cakes might be something that I would buy and I already have used Jelly Rolls when I want a taste of a new offering without buying more yardage.
Thanks for making this offering...

How nice of Joanna of Fig Tree to donate patterns! I love her new fabric line and new book. I'm looking forward to next July in Long Beach. I hope to see all my favorite California designers and teachers along with many national teachers as well.
Thanks Gina for the time it takes you to bring us this information and all these free goodies.
Cheers!

Hi Gina,
Great seeing you at Market, as always.
Yup! I ordered them for my store, too! They will cost the same as a jelly roll -- my rep said they contain the same amount of fabric (you do the math, I'm busy unpacking from Market!).

What a cute pattern, but simple enough I may actually be able to complete it! :)

Hello, My name is Amy and I'm a fabriholic. I've really gone nuts this year and can't seem to collect enough fabric. Now what I need are patterns! It is divine that there is already a pttern available for a product that won't come out for two months. Yeah, I could cut up my own 10" squares but where's the fun in that??

The layer cakes look like so much fun. I love patterns that go with these specific packaging of fabrics. Congrats to all you that one the layer cakes. Would love to see the completed quilts. Maybe Gina should ask for a pic to put on quilter's buzz.

I love those layer cakes!! I could just eat them up. What a way to get a "taste" of each fabric. I love them and will be trying to find them in my local quilt store in Palm Desert.

What a cute idea and a good way to get a little more fabric than the five inch squares.

I can't wait to see the new patterns for layer cakes.

Hey Quilters I need your Help!I know this is not on the subject of the posted conversations but.... I am looking for Moda's Rhubarb and Ginger's Roses in beige. It is a tone on tone. It looks like a tan material with muted brown roses. I think the # is 2465-14 or something like that. It is not the backing material. I am short 1/4 to 1/2 yard. I would be willing to pay for the material and postage. I am trying to finish my daughters quilt before she comes home 12-19!! If you can help please contact me. Thanks, Pattie macclan6@comcast.net
