Things are funny sometimes. We worked like crazy to get quilt patterns, samples and quilts ready for Quilt Market. Two nights before I had to get on a plane to head out, I was fooling around with fabric……Wee Play from American Jane and Lake House.
When I was done, I had a very new and interesting quilted product. Was it a tabletop? Was it a rug? Was it a diaper changing pad? It is possible that it is all of those things and maybe more.
I did not take a photograph or create a pattern for this new idea – I just named it – the “Daisy Dew” and then I made three samples. When we got to our booth at Quilt Market, I “dropped” them on the Astroturf like flowers in a field and the name changed to “Daisy Dew Drop.”
Of all the things that hung in the Threaded Pear Studio booth (including the long johns on the line), nothing drew more “oohs” and “ahhs” and “where can I get one?” than the “Daisy Dew Drop.” Several visitors said
it was the freshest idea at the show. Despite the great reception, feedback and orders for our quilt and apron patterns - all the work, all the piecing, professional photography and quilting that went into nine quilt patterns and three apron patterns couldn’t match the popularity of Daisy Dew Drop for pure crowd appeal. So, I am busy making patterns for the Daisy Drew Drop and they will be available at Threaded Pear by the first part of June.
How could this non-traditional quilting item cause such a stir?
The Daisy Drew Drop is unique for a few reasons
- It is made from whole cloth – no pieces—just a simple appliquéd center.
- Two fabrics front and back, a cute center and bit of rick-rack or other embellishment and batting. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
- It can be “dropped” wherever you want – floor table, bed or hung
- There is rubber backing that you can buy and “paint” on the back, so it truly can become an adorable rug if you want. (I know United Notions carries it, I think I sold ba-zillion jars of it because their booth was next to mine and I was talking all about it.)
- It can also be a small snuggler quilt and be “dropped” in front of the TV.
- The drop can also become the perfect practice piece for your own machine quilting. Quilt away without worrying about a piecing project that took a lot of time to piece.
- Plus, it is just dang cute!
- Oh yeah, and it is easy to clean and can be “dropped” in the washing machine time after time.
It is functional and a completely different way to look at making a quilt.
So you never know. You never know when your inspiration is truly inspired and appreciated by thousands or just your creative outlet appreciated by only your soul. You never know when something that is dropped on the floor will draw more attention than things at eye level. You just never know. And you will never know until you try. You will never know until you drop a few daisies and see what sticks.

Love these! Isn't it great when that kind of last-minute messing around inspiration grows to be a success. I would love to try a daisy dew drop too. Can't wait for the pattern - very very cute.

Hi Gina,
I always love reading your blog. I have a Brittany (dog) whose name is Dazy Dew. I told her you named a pattern after her. She sends wet kisses to you.

Well, thank goodness I won't have to wait too long for that pattern! Maybe I'll actually be unpacked by the time you get it done.
