What is Sample Spree at Quilt Market? Sample
Fat quarter bundles of new fabric are sold to shop owners, months before the bolts of fabric are sent out. Cool new gadgets, tools and notions are introduced and sold at below wholesale prices. Yup, this is the deal of the century of NEW and fresh quilting industry products.
If you haven’t seen it you might not believe it. A few thousand rabid quilt shop owners waited in a line outside that snaked back from the doors at least a few hundred yards. Why? I had to ask. So I walked the line, stopping to check in with the die hards to find answers.
For example, how long had those ladies sitting at the very front of the line waited?
The answer? Four hours. They arrived at
And how much would they spend? Many have been saving up all year for a big splurge at sample spree. I talked to a few shop owners, who had shopping lists in hand from their staff at their shop. What samples were they seeking?
I will post some video of this crazed event over the next day or two.
Were you there? If so, how would you explain it?

How on earth are you posting so fast Miss Gina??? I snuck home for a day, but me... I'm resting. I got in early to Sample Spree because I got to "help". I left shortly before 8 and saw all the quilters lined up/camped out in the lobby waiting to get in. OHMYGAWD... you blurred your eyes a little - they looked like 1000's of kids waiting for Santa to arrive with a sleigh full of gifts! I guess for one night - Portland was the North Pole!

I can't even imagine. It looks like a crazed group of women. But a fun group and quilters are wonderful people.

My daughter and I were there. We posted photos on our blog of the line to get in, here:

We've been doing sample spree for years and can't figure out why people stand in line. We always feel the need for a break after schoolhouse, so we show up around 7:50 and look at the line in wonder. Then around 8:15 we stroll in through the open doors. But the most insane place in the Frenzy is always the Moda booth, and since we buy so little Moda, maybe that's why we don't get it. :-)
