Big Crowds Attend Quilt Festival In So. California...Let Me Share Some Numbers

I want to share some show numbers with you….long%20beach%20crowd.jpg

I got an email from Bob Ruggiero, the director of publications and pubic information at Quilts, Inc.—the sponsors of Quilt Market and Quilt Festival telling me the latest stats from the Quilt Festival show recently held in Long Beach, CA.

I  thought you might find it interesting to know that nearly 19,000 attended the show.  So big were the numbers were in fact, that they actually opened the show 15 minutes before the scheduled opening time…Now, that may not sound like it was that big of a deal…but it is if as a vendor, like me...scrambling to get everything set for the big “door opening”.

IT IS ALL ABOUT NUMBERS!long%20beach%20vendors.jpg
According to Bob, here are the Quilts, Inc. numbers:

530+ vendors—WOW!  The logistics of getting every vendor with their products and displays in and out of the venue was crazy!

800+ quilts and wearable art on display, stunning for sure...see the videos

Dozens of busloads of quilters and I can only guess how many rolls of toliet tissue...

Lots and lots of classes and lectures….so many in fact, they actually started the day before the show

A ba-zillion gallons (my estimation, not Bob's) of Diet soda and coffee

This show had a few problems as well, admits, Bob.  Not enough food, parking with some quitlers waiting 2 hours to get in... Most of the kinks were worked out before day two began; however, they still opened the doors 15 minutes a head of schedule that second day because of the unexpected door busting crowds.

HOW MUCH DO THEY SPEND?

I am always curious myself, about how much fabric, buttons, patterns, antiques, books, tools, etc that is actually sold at shows like this one.  Most vendors do not disclose this “sacred” information--I ask tactfully as I can—but no one really spills the beans.

MY NUMBERS—Full Disclosure

In case you are wondering about me (I took and demonstrated Gammill quilting machines with Cranberry Quiltworks and sold patterns, quilt kits and assorted goodies with Threaded Pear Studio)jumbo%20rick%20rack.jpg

If you are interested in MY numbers...here goes:

My numbers from this three-day show:

-I sold 878 yards of JUMBO 2” Ric Rac --actually it is 1" and 13/16, I round up and call it 2"--don't get me in trouble....

I sold 48 sets of sock monkey kits are waiting to “come to life” with a stitch or two and some stuffing

-I had a 10’ x 40’ booth —which cost over $4000….crazy, I know!

-I had five people working the 9 hour show daily

-We made hundreds of sales, but only took in 2 checks!

-It took us two full days to set up the booth

-And four hours to break it down.

Plan For Next Year....

This was a west coast debut show for Quilts, Inc. and when I talked to Bob, they said they have signed up to do it at least 2 more years…The dates for 2009 are July 24-26 (with classes beginning July 23)..Why do I tell you this now almost a year in advance…just thought you could plan a summer get-a-way to Long Beach next year…to stop by and say “hi”—and see all the goodies at this show.

I’ll be back next year with more colors of Ric Rac and a few more kits and patterns, and I am sure about 20,000 of you quilters will be too.

Hi Gina,

I flew down from Northern Calif. for the Long Beach show. I didn't have any problems with parking, getting lunch or getting in but I was early most of the days.

I was surprised at how many chairs were around for shoppers to sit and rearrange bags or just sit! Another new thing to me was that it was open until 7PM Friday and Saturday. That is really nice if you take classes till 5PM. Sunday closing time was 3PM and that surprised a lot of shoppers but I'm sure it was nice for the vendors. I would like to see a Preview night next year.

I would highly recommend that anyone new to quilt shows be sure to come for more than one day.

Thanks for giving us the dates for next years Long Beach Show. Hope to see you at PIQF in October.

Hi Gina,
Ok, you talked me into it.. I really want to do a booth next year. I thought it was a very well attended show with a good mix of vendors there. I was bummed, I couldn't find you on Sunday to say goodbye :(

Cheryl and I went to the show Sunday and thought is was fantastic. We're anxiously looking forward to next year. We were at the door when they opened Sunday morning and, after admiring the quilts displayed, didn't have enough time to visit more than a few of the vendors. Also, with the Long Beach show scheduled right on the heels of the SoCal Quilt Run, our spending funds were a bit limited. We're glad you did well! I was going to say "Hi!" to you toward the end of the day,(Cheryl and I had split up to search for a specific batik she needed to have all her colors for a quilt) but you were just beginning to bend the Moda sales rep's ear. ;^) I found a fabric REALLY close to what she was looking for, so the split-up payed off.
We had no problems with traffic or parking on Sunday, but we'd also recommend people plan two days attendance at this show. See you and the Cranberry Quiltworks crew soon!

My mom and I attended the Long Beach show and had a wonderful time! I was really impressed with the amount of vendors and had a great time looking at all the quilts. I will definitely be back next year!

I didn't go to the show, but a friend of mine, Brenda at Acorn Quilt and Gift Company, was a vendor and she said she was amazed at how busy it was and actually started to sell out of patterns on the first day- WOW!!! Sounds like you all had a great time!

I went with 2 girlfriends. I bought a brown/pink fabric pack from you and I have already made the top and can't wait to finish it. This show was so much fun. It seemed better than the Houston show. It was great. I took classes and I spent lots of money (bought a new suitcase to bring home fabric). Great vendors. I am planning on attending next year again.

I thought the Long Beach show was fabulous - the only problem I had was getting to see all the quilts with the short time I had left after going to all (well, most!) of the vendors!

This is not a complaint. The shopping opportunities were great, and it was fun to see a few people I knew.
