How Sweet It Is!
Well, Moda continues to “serve” us up some more pre-cut fabric goodies. Joining the platter of jelly rolls, layer cakes (now even bigger!), charm squares and fat quarters are two new fresh selections.
How about “Sweet rolls![]()
Moda Marketing Guru, Lissa Alexander, tells all
Hi all,
I wanted to let you know of a few new things happening at Moda. We have made a change to all of the future Layer Cakes. Each pack is now going to have 42 squares for the price of 40. There will be 2 bonus squares in each pack. This will make it easy to make a 6 x 7 project --add some borders and be done!
The 2 extra squares will be a variety from the collection
And we have just introduced
smells like a jellyroll
works like a jelly roll
Except is an inch thinner
and a whole lotta' fun!
I like to say low cal. Who doesn't love that?
And, if that is not enough for your sewing pleasure, we have TurnoversTM. Turnovers are 6"squares cut in half diagonally to yield half square triangles.
Imagine all the possibilities combining the different precuts.
(Thanks to the creative minds that came up with this during the Moda U retreat- you know who you are!)
Turnovers are 6" squares cut into half square triangles and you can you use them with charm packs. We really wanted to be able to sew 2 triangles together so they would finish the same size as a charm square, however, we made them a big bigger, so they can be can be squared up to pair up with charm squares—for a perfect fit.
Turnovers and Sweet rolls will be available in selected collections. They will be debuting at Houston Quilt Market and arriving in stores beginning Jan. 2009

Lissa, you're brilliant. As we all know, women of a certain age don't need calories. This way we can have our cake and eat it too! Treats with no calories. What a concept!

Oh I particularly like the triangles! I don't like cutting, so this is perfect for me! Really great idea...

The triangles are such an awesome idea!
Posted by: Pikku-kettu | September 17, 2008 11:50 PM
Both of these are great ideas, and I especially like the triangles because I have a hard time cutting them accurately. With these, I'd only have to concentrate on sewing them together accurately!

I love the pre-cut triangles!!! What a great idea...

making it so easy to just whip up a quilt instead of taking the time to have to cut before sewing!
Congrats to whoever came up with the idea of turnovers! very clever! I have already thought of 3 different ideas using turnovers.
Oh Sweet rolls great idea too, as I love to make little quilts and these size strips are perfect for those.

Wow! These are great ideas! I especially love the Turnover idea! I have nerve damage in my arms so rotary cutting can be painful for me. Pre-cut fabric would be wonderful! I cannot wait for my quilt store to have these in stock!

Wow, what will Moda think of next? I would have loved those turnovers for the pinwheel quilt I just made. And it is so nice that they are now selling 42 squares in the layer cakes. These are a great way to make up a quick gift quilt!

Luscious! Looks good enough to gobble them up! *slurp* What a precious idea to have turnovers...see....I have a love-hate relationship with people that come up with these ideas....I love that they came up with it....but hate it that I didn't think of it first!
Posted by: Xina | September 18, 2008 6:51 AM
What a great idea!! I can see Moda marketing sweet rolls and turnovers in packages by themes: colors, holidays, bugs, fruits, flowers, sports and endless more. I think they would be especially good marketed to beginner quilters like teens who are just learning to use rotary cutters and may not be very accurate yet. Experienced quilters would save time choosing fabrics and cutting also! Fun for everyone!
Posted by: Marty | September 18, 2008 6:52 AM
I CAN'T wait for the sweet rolls!!!!! I have all sorts of patterns that will work for them, and how fun to be able to get a small simple project out of a whole collection.
Posted by: Amy | September 18, 2008 6:58 AM
Wow, what great ideas for more precut fabrics. I just love the charm squares and jelly rolls. I haven't been brave enough to purchase a layer cake yet but oh the temptation is growing. All of these precut bundles are so great for people like me that want a bit of an entire line of fabric.
Posted by: Anita | September 18, 2008 7:07 AM
These sweet rolls and turnovers are so clever! I already love the jelly rolls, so what a creative concept to keep going with the theme. I wish more stores in my area carried a better variety of all these.
Posted by: Terriaw | September 18, 2008 7:18 AM
They look great; I especially think the "turnovers" will be yummy!
Posted by: Anya | September 18, 2008 7:30 AM

Posted by: Paige R | September 18, 2008 7:47 AM
I love the charm packs and am hoping to find some layer cakes at our Creativ Festival next month. These ideas look fantastic -- turnovers and sweet rolls! Can you imagine a non-quilter listening to someone discussing jelly rolls, sweet rolls, turnovers and layer cakes? They'd probably think the quilters had serious serious sweet tooth problems! LOL
Posted by: Cathi | September 18, 2008 7:56 AM
I LOVE the idea of the turnovers and will definitely buy them to go with charm packs. I probably would not buy the sweet rolls because I like working with the bigger strips, but I love that Moda is always coming up with something new for us!
Posted by: Lisa D. | September 18, 2008 8:01 AM
O.K. I'm totally hungry now! mmmm. A Mary Engelbreit Cherry Turnover with Ice cream! LOL. What a great idea. Wish, Wish, Wish I was going to Fall Market. ooxx`jodi

The new turnovers intrigue me -- I'm a fly-by-seat-of-pants quilter but I'm intrigued by triangles and can imagine the perfect baby quilt made with my first pack of Moda pre-cuts (as distinguished from the many fat quarter sets I have already).
Posted by: Daphne | September 18, 2008 8:17 AM
Love the turnover idea. It'll be fun combining a pack of those with a layer cake pack and playing with them on my design wall. Very clever, Moda!

Wow - I'm a new quilter and was inspired by these 'colorful houses' at http://blockaday.com/colourful-houses/ - I've started a small quilt with my sister's guidance using up some of her stash and the rotary cutter - BUT wow - I'd love to make a full-size quilt and in particular the turnovers would make it a breeze - can't wait - maybe they'll be my first personal stash purchase!!

Hi,
wow, new precuts...I'm addicted to all other precuts Moda presented so far {well, of course this means I'm addicted to the fabric lines themselves!}...first because they're so much fun and second because I have a 'problem' to cut in big pieces of fabric...it just doesn't seem right *lol* - and without cutting there aren't any beautiful quilts...
I love the idea of precut triangles - and it's too clever they'll matching with Charm Squares as HSTs...
I wonder how long it takes before a pattern is published which includes ALL sorts of precut MODA fabrics....;o)
Posted by: Julia | September 18, 2008 1:59 PM
...oh, I forgot: those Sweet Rolls are just PERFECT for adapting JellyRoll patterns to smaller size quilts...ingenious!
Cheers, Julai

I absolutely L-O-V-E the turnovers! Being a beginner I'm a little wary of triangles, I'm always afriad I wont cut them just right! These are perfect for me!
Posted by: Renee | September 18, 2008 2:01 PM
I LOVE THOSE PRE-CUT FABRICS....A BOX OF CUPCAKES, OR JELLY ROLLS FROM THE LOCAL BAKERY WOULD MAKE THEM EVEN BETTER!!!!!

What a marvelous idea....sweet rolls and turnovers to add to the sweet treats of layer cakes....
Love them...

My two grandchildren love the quilts I've made them, and they're starting to learn to make their own small quilts, sewing by hand. They can work pretty independently if the cutting has already been done, so the layer cakes have been great. The turnovers will add some variety to their blocks -- super idea!

I love all of Moda's precut items and have used all of them. Now I'm waiting for Moda to come out with "icing" for these things! Maybe that will be someone to put them together for me! About the comment that these would be good for "new" quilters and teens - forget that! I'm FAR past "new and teen" and I love 'em.

These new products sound absolutely yummy! Thanks!

All the talk of baked goods is making me hungry. What else goes good with sewing but FOOD? LOL Love the new turnovers. Great idea.

I'm a Moda girl, I love all of the Moda fabrics, and they entice me with new great fabrics all the time. When Jelly Rolls came out, it was so exciting, I love them. Finding out about these new sweet rolls and turnovers is just the best news I've heard in a long time. I love them both! I can't wait to get some. What a great idea with those turnovers!

I have been waiting for Moda to bring out some different Yummies and you have not disapointed Lissa. I can't cut straight even with rulers and rotary cutters so appreciate the precut goodies. Can't wait to order the triangles to go with my charm packs.

I do believe I'm hungry! Great stuff!
Posted by: Anonymous | September 19, 2008 8:33 PM
Totally LOVE 'em! How much fun is that! I've been teaching kids at school how to quilt and we used the charm packs, made it SO easy. Bought my first layer cake the other day and it's scrumptious. Can't wait to play with those triangles. Good thinking, keep 'em coming!
Posted by: Clair | September 19, 2008 8:38 PM
What a wonderful idea! Quilters are so busy these days and are always on the lookout for time saving ideas - like the pre-cut fabrics! I'm looking forward to seeing the new items in my LQS!

Jelly rolls and turnovers. What a great idea! (and why am I suddenly hungry?) I remember cutting hundreds of triangles to make my daughter's charm stars quilt. It took me years. Honest. Poor kid would have had the quilt so much sooner if turnovers had been invented already!

They look like a lot of fun. Linda gerig

Wow! That looks like a lot of bias edges!
Posted by: Theresa | September 19, 2008 11:27 PM
First I think it's a great marketing tool because who doesn't like bundles of fabric and the names...layer cake, turnover, jelly roll...delicious. I also think they're terrific because the cutting is already done and there are lots of great patterns called for these pre-cut sizes. AND they give you a chance to own every piece in the line without having to purchase way more than you need. Love them!!!
Posted by: Stephanie | September 20, 2008 4:01 AM
I love these as it is so much fun to come up with new ways to use them and sometimes you just need to have them and not do anything with them as they look too lovely to disturb. If only the calorie laden stuff could stay untouched.
Posted by: Dianne | September 20, 2008 4:21 AM
I'm just beginning to quilt and am overwhelmed with all the delicious patterns out there. It's becoming an addiction! I love the idea of the turnovers...the wheels are turning in the old noodle!!

Turnovers and Jellyrolls! Just in time for breakfast! I love these. Especially because now with two little kids, the cutting takes FOREVER! What a great idea!

Posted by: Carol | September 20, 2008 6:52 AM
Oh dear. More sweet ways to entice me to buy fabric. I love it! How will I decide which format to buy? Seriously, though, the turnovers are a great idea!
Posted by: Michelle | September 20, 2008 6:53 AM
The Turnovers are genius! I have a friend who is interested in making a quilt, but wasn't so sure about all the cutting. I told her Layer Cakes are for you!
**Oh, I hope I win!**

I love the turnovers and can see a class developing around layer cakes, turnovers and the like. What's next? Petit Fours? These get the creative juices flowing. But now I'm off in search of chocolate........ colored fabric!

Hmm where do I begin? I'm not sure who came up with "turnovers" but it's brilliant. In fact all the pre-cut fabrics are brillant, but you know that LOL. I buy for myself...but more than anything I buy them for my mother in law. She's had problems with her right shoulder and carpel tunnel in both wrists. I used to cut all her projects, now I buy Moda charms, strips etc. They are a godsend for me and HER. Thank you from both of us!

I love, love jelly rolls! I can hardly wait for these new products to come out. They will add to ease of sewing with jelly rolls and charm squares.
Posted by: MichelleB | September 21, 2008 7:22 AM
I've never made a quilt from the precut packs, though I've thought about it. maybe if the right fabric line came around. a lot of lines seem to have a handful of prints that are higher contrast - like some white background pieces in a line of saturated colors - that I don't know what to do with. so I end up choosing my own fabrics so that I can pick and choose the colors.
the triangle turnovers are interesting. I'm guessing it's cut in the traditionally way, so that the long side of the triangle is the stretchy side? if it wasn't, I would definitely get a pack. I hate dealing with bias when I make my own triangles.

Wow! I can't wait until next January.
I wish they could come to the Pacific International Quilt Festival.
Posted by: Mikamika | September 21, 2008 8:31 AM
I have just discovered charm packs and jelly rolls and love how they cut the time down in my projects...cutting the cutting time. I have began collecting them and find them useful in deciding which fabrics to use in a project then I can always order the fabric I need online!
Thanks for the great product!
Posted by: Ferne | September 21, 2008 8:34 AM
I hope this comment makes the list. I tried yesterday and this morning still no comment. I think the turnovers are to die for and sweet rolls will fit many of the patterns that you have to cut a jelly roll down too. Thanks for your continuing brilliance. Kathie

I love these! Great time-savers for those of us don't have as much time to sew as we'd like (i.e. everybody)! Can't wait to see all the new patterns that come out using combinations of the pre-cuts! Very clever to give all of them "sweet" names, so we can indulge while still watching our calories!

give any fabric a foody name and i'm all over it!
Posted by: rebecca | September 23, 2008 7:45 AM
Thank you Moda! You keep coming up with things to inspire quilters and keep us coming back for more. I can just see wonderful fantasy pinwheels being made with the turnovers. Cutting is my least favorite part of quilting, so I love that part being completed for me.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 23, 2008 8:08 AM
I love all the options to have a taste of the fabric collections. (Isn't taste the perfect word?!)
Thanks!!!

Fabulous! As well as being a great way to get a complete range of fabrics, now there are so many yummy treats to choose from. So what's next? I'm thinking, muffins, cupcakes, cookies, scrolls - talk about making us hungry for more! These make great gifts for quilters as well. Thanks Moda!
Posted by: Alison | September 23, 2008 9:02 AM
I think Moda now offers too many different kinds of pre-cuts. The "speciality" could get lost. For me cutting fabric is a big part of fun when creating a new quilt. Certainly I like MODA - the quality in generell and the precision of pre-cuts.
HAPPY QUILTING to all of you :)

Wow, more than 200 comments! :) What we quilters will do for a bit of fabric... :) I really love the new cuts of fabric from Moda. I've only been quilting for a few years and I still have small kids at home, so while I can't always afford to go and buy a yard or more of all the designer fabrics I love, I am still able to get a little taste with these more affordable collections. It's fun to see all the quilts people come up with using them too!

How much easier can sewing get? This is wonderfuljust sit down and sew away!! Especailly great for classroom sewing when space is so limited,no real yardage cutting required, the Turnovers sound especaiolly interesting to me,they can be a challenge to cut accurately.
