Fun for all!
I have been working with a event planner/travel company, "the Sixthman" to plan a quilting/crafting cruise in the spring of 2010.
My dream has been to book the whole dang cruise ship with quilters!
Yup, the whole ship and all of it's events and activities dedicated to us crafty bunch! There will be guest lecturers with artists and designers, sewing and quilting classes, demos, all-night sewing spectaculars, ...and more.![]()
And Andy, at the Sixthman, is going to help me do it. Andy works to "create unique experiences by bringing together like-minded people in exclusive, interactive and intimate environments".
Right now, he hosts events with Rock Stars.
He shares my vision and we are working to make it happen
A week ago, Andy invited me to go on a cruise "to see how his people" do it and to talk business. The crazy part is, I am leaving today with the hubby! (I haven't been that spontaneous since college--hard to do with 4 kids , I guess!)
I will be going on the "John Mayer" cruise (bummer, probably no Jennifer Aniston because of the break up andl all!). John will be playing (along with 15 other bands!) on this 5 day event.
I will be working on the details and date and doing cruise business talk on deck chairs---so we can book "our" event. I will keep you posted.
We will be porting in Cabo, I will try not to share a pig's head and chicken feet with you this time!
I am taking my camera, And hey I might get some good "quilter goes Paparazzi" photos!
COMMENT AND WIN!
Have you been on a quilting cruise? What is the best thing about it? Comment and win. The Prize? Since I am trying to book a GIANT cruise, the randomly picked comment, will win 20 yards of GIANT Ric Rac. Make a comment by April 4 at midnight Pacific time.

Gena, you are SO GREAT! A cruise for quilters? I have never been on one, but I have been on a cruise where everyone was NOT quilters....it would BE A BLAST! If anyone can pull this off, it will be YOU! GOOD LUCK! Choose me, I am your first post!

Hello! I've never even been on a cruise! So why am I posting? I love fabric, love others who love fabric and it's an awesome idea. Quilting in the sun, or at the pool? With Gina? Hhmmm, let me think...Yes!

I've never heard of a quilting cruise, but I have been on a Royal Carribbean cruise. Wonderful! The idea is intriguing.

I've cruised - not a quilt cruise, just fun with hubby... But I am SO SUPER JEALOUS you get to hang with my buddy John - you are going to have a LOT of fun, John gets a little crazy on these cruises. I do believe last time he pretended to be Borat, which made for some scandelous photos on the internets.

I've never been on a cruise but I can tell you what I think would be the best thing about being on a quilting cruise and that would be being able to quilt all day long with no interruptions. I wouldn't have to clean, cook or clean up the messes from my 2 year old. I could just quilt all day long:) Now that is a dream vacation.

I could be spontaneous and go with you! I could help you plan. I could fetch your beach shoes. I know I could make you laugh!!! And I love ric rac.

I've been on a cruise--to Alaska--but not a quilting cruise. That sounds like a fabulous time. I would try to make an effort to get to that, depending on the location. I think it would be great if there was lots of scenery and off-ship activities and then while sailing, quilting!

Good morning. I have never been on a quilting cruise however it sounds like fun. I am not sure how much I would get accomplished though because they have lounge chairs on crusies.

This idea is fabulous! A ship full of crazy quilters... and the shopping at ports of call.... I loved the cruise that I went on (not a quilt cruise)... The food, the service, the beautiful places... are most inspiring! Let me know if you need some help :)

My quilter friend and I went on a quilting cruise up the Mississippi River from Memphis to Paducah. It was an ideal trip in all respects. The paddle boat was loaded with quilters, so no matter who you sat next to, you had something in common to talk about. And everyone was wearing quilted items and working on quilting projects so you could go over and talk to them. Not having to think about meals was one of the best things, particularly once we arrived at Paducah. When it was time to eat, we walked back to the boat where there were no lines to stand in to get food and we had a delicious meal that was already paid for! There were no classes on the boat, although some took classes at the quilt show during the couple days we were in port, but there were quilting lectures a few times during our "at sea" periods. Another highlight was after a day of shopping, we all laid out our purchases on our beds and went from room to room to see what each other had bought. It's fun just remembering!

I would love to go on any cruise. I would love some time to quilt, um and watch others. I am learning.

I went on a McCalls Quilting cruise a few years back. It was wonderful! There were four teachers and some teaching staff from the magazine. We had classes on the days we were at sea and nightly little demonstrations. We even had a cocktail party with free drinks (alcohol costs on a cruise!) in the middle of the cruise and it was great to talk to everyone and meet all the teachers and such. I had a great time and if I had the money I would go again....

A QUILTING cruise...sounds like so much fun! I have never been on one, but would love too!
I would think beeing with other quilter and sharing ideas would be great! Maybe instead of a BOM, have something that could be finished or atleast started while on the cruise.

I have never been on a quilting cruise....but they have always sounded like FUN! (As long as we don't get sea sick while sewing....whoa-a-a-a!!) :)

I've never been on a cruise. I think the best part would be to be stuck with so many other quilters on a ship and meeting some new well-known teachers. And, shopping in unusual places!

I've been on cruises and i LOVE them!A quilting cruise would be so over the top!!!!!!!!!!

I have been on two quilt cruises and they were both wonderful. The organizers really knew how to cater to quilters and their families and the ships had the facilities to accommodate them. I am a little sceptical that this guy can bridge rocker style cruises to quilters. Good luck!

I went on stage one of this cruise event and attended a benefit concert for VH1's "Save the Music"--last night. Stopping by the first day of grand opening for my quilt shop this morning, then back on the boat for an afternoon departure.

The idea of a quilting cruise sounds good, but when you think about it, if quilting is your goal, it is hard to do it with the distractions of ports of call to visit. So much time on a cruise is spent waiting in lines to get on and off the ship. It is hardly relaxing if you run all over various ports and then come back to quilt instead of nap.
Also, most quilt cruises are inordinately expensive full-fare events; way too expensive with no breaks for the third person, etc. The somewhat expensive Empty Spools Seminars would be a better bet than spending $2000 or more on a cruise in which you do way too little quilty stuff.
Just my two cents and what goes through my mind when I see ads on these kinds of 'retreats'. Each to his own, of course. BTW, if you schedule one, then why not make it a 5 day one-port cruise so there is time to really quilt AND relax?

Hi gina, I've gone on a quilting cruise (W/Alex Anderson)to alaska and on a cruise to Mexico (east coast) with quilt shop owners. both were wonderful and lots of fun!

I've always wanted to try a cruise. Where are we headed? Maybe we should voyage somewhere cold so we can use all of the quilts that we make? or have a day where we make quilts for indigineous locals, schools or nursing homes of the place we visit?

I would love to go on a quilting cruise. One thing I worry abt.though, is that I might get seasick...but didn't see it mentioned in any of the comments, so maybe I wouldn't.

I've been on a cruise but not a quilting cruise. Sounds awesome! I'm so jealous you are on a cruise with John Mayer. He was one of best concerts I've ever been too! Hey I stopped by your shop today. It's hoppin! Have a great trip Hal&Gina!

And my two worlds collide! I LOVE John Mayer. I hope you have a blast on his cruise, Gina! Any chance you could get John as entertainment on the quilter's cruise? That would be a cruise I could not refuse! Seriously, a quilter's cruise (whomever the entertainment) sounds wonderful.

OH Gina I can't wait!!!! Tell me where to sign up!
Okay I have never been on a quilting cruise but I have been on cruises with large groups of friends. They are a blast. I keep trying to talk my mom into a quilting cruise. This might do it.
I hope you are looking to leave out of the Long Beach port.

Gina, I've never been on a cruise, let alone a quilting cruise. I have several ladies with whom I quilt with that are thinking of going. If the date work for me at work, I'll be there with rings on my fingers, bells on my toes and fabric threads everywhere else we go. I am in need of a quilting get away, this sounds like the ticket for me. sah

I went on a very short cruise, the first day I got a fever and had to return to shore! I was on a middle school spring break trip and the chaperons said you have to go home or you'll make everyone sick. That has been my cruising experience. 20 yards of giant rik rack will certainly be better than that one day cruise!

A ship full of quilters would be the best. Would the shopping area be filled with Quilt Shops??? Now that would be a cruise!
Posted by: Sharon Decker | March 29, 2009 1:51 PM

I'm off on my first cruise in May, and I'm really excited. I'm going with my husband, and I think he would have died before going on a quilting cruise with me! That sounds fantastic though! I'm relatively new to quilting, so I'm sure I'd learn a TON!

Quilting cruise would be fun. Been to Alaska on a cruise and attended all the classes they offered and learned a lot. Classes all about quilting would be great. Hope they have extra power for all those sewing machines that will be running. hehe

Ohh.. how about a rock n' roll quilting cruise?! Am so envious you get to go on the John Mayer cruise. My thought about 'one themed' cruises (i.e. just quilting) is that you should 'pair' it with another activity so an accompaning spouse would have something to do, too!
Posted by: tjesa | April 4, 2009 7:56 AM
I have been checking out quilt cruises ever since I retired. I think if it had a coordinated interest for my spouse, I would be more inclined to go.

Have checked out different quilting cruises, but so far can't talk DH into thinking it would be a good idea. Guess I gotta try a little harder, as he loves going to Mexico.

I went on that cruise! It was really fun but I have to admit I found myself going through quilting withdrawls! I'd sign up for a quilt cruise for sure and think they are a great outfit to work with! I'm excited about it!
